However Carafate cannot prevent other ulcers from developing or lessen their severity, since duodenal ulcers are recurring ulcers.

Special precautions if you are pregnant or breastdeeding: The safety of Carafate in pregnancy has not been established. Carafate should therefore be used with caution during pregnancy, and only if the benefits to the mother outweigh any risks to the foetus. Seek medical advice from your doctor.

It is not known if Carafate passes into breast milk. Carafate should be used with caution in nursing mothers.

Special warnings about Carafate:

  • The safety and efficacy of Carafate in children has not been studied.
  • Carafate is not recommended for use in premature infants.
  • Carafate should be used with caution in patients with
    • Decreased kidney function
    • Delayed emptying of the stomach contents into the intestine
